Real Talk: <b>A Realist Dialogic Approach in a Realist Evaluation</b>

Realist evaluation is a method increasingly adopted to provide an understanding of how and why program works, for whom, under what circumstances. Initial theories (IPT) are the crucial starting point any realist evaluation, however descriptions about they developed in practice remain under-reported published literature. This article argues value genuine research-group conversations using David Bohm’s concept dialogue research. We label it dialogic approach. draw out relational qualities as well contextual circumstances through our development IPT interview guides research study on implementation scaling large-system value-based transform complex health services. selected relevant middle-range theories, conducted literature review, drew informal discussions with key stakeholders, develop conversations. The benefits this approach were: 1) rigorous, novel, deep well-tailored IPT, 2) detailed intervention investigation rapport networks participants, 3) empirically grounded Context-Mechanism-Outcome (CMO) configurations, predicated suitable abstract contextually-contingent 4) productive team interactions which supported entire process. challenges include: establishing retaining sense humility across team, can hinder relationship, time resource heavy. paper uses theory ethnographic insights advance existing evaluations offer transferable lessons other scholars considering similar approaches. Moreover, we content that use extend methodological novel contribution work.
